Marco Federighi graduates in 1980 from the University of Pisa, Italy, defending a thesis on the oscillations of stellar plasma. After three years as a PG student at the Scuola Normale Superiore, Pisa, and one year of military service, he joined GEC-Marconi where he carried out research in the field of III-V compound semiconductors and DFB lasers for telecommunications (1985-1989). In 1989 he joined the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering at UCL, where he carried out research on the PECVD deposition of Er-doped Silica and on the modelling of Erbium-Doped fiber Amplifiers. He is now Vice Dean for Education in the Faculty of Engineering Science. He leads the development of doctoral and MSc programmes for industry, and is setting up a network of engineering schools to carry out collaborative research projects sponsored by industry.
